The leadership tussle going on at the Lagos state House of Assembly between the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa and the newly elected Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, has become the most discussed subject especially by Lagosians who are still in shock at the unfortunate development.
The situation has given rise to security operatives storming the sacred Assembly complex at will and even the former Speaker, Obasa, invading the house and breaking into the office of the duly elected Speaker.
According to observers who have closely monitored developments, they have been to make a very instructive finding and reached a telling decision on the matter, which is the fact that it's not just the 36 Lawmakers of the Assembly that have rejected Obasa, even the administrative staff do not want him back!!
Speaking to this reporter after the invasion of the Assembly by Mudashiru Obasa, a senior staff, whose identity has been concealed, said: "It is obvious that people don't like this man, see how the people, the staff, are keeping away from him. He is not enjoying any solidarity from the staff. Ordinarily, by now, people should be coming out to welcome him and singing joyfully at his arrival after having being away for a long time. But that is not the case here."
When asked why? He responded without delay, "Isn't that obvious? It's not only his colleagues, the lawmakers, who have problems with him, the staff don't like him as well. He bullies everybody. He is not friendly. He does not show love to the people and ordinary staff around him. He is like an Emperor in this place. Nobody dares to question his actions."
He continued ,"Can you see all the people behind him? Those are his thugs and political supporters, not staff of the Assembly, who really should be the one rallying round him at this time if they truly love him. But that's not the case, they don't like him, they prefer Madam Speaker who has always been nice to everyone. She is approachable. She is also a very kind and generous person to all the staff. Everybody loves her," he concluded.
Another staff, a lady in her late thirties who works as secretary to one of the Lawmakers,, added, "Didn't you see the videos of the moment Madam Speaker moved into her office as Speaker of the House? Didn't you see the crowd behind her? Dozens of both junior and senior staff all trooped out of their offices to show their solidarity to her and support her leadership of the house. Those were actual staff of the Assembly, not thugs or political supporters. They all came out enmass because they genuinely love Madam Speaker. If they don't love her they would've stayed in their offices and keep away from her. She is a very warm and friendly person. She never disrespects people, no matter how low their status is. This is why people don't joke with her around here. Unlike the former Speaker, his arrogance is annoying. He makes everyone feel like you're beneath him. He has no regard for anybody. This is why the staff are happy that he has been removed. Everybody wants Princess Mojisola Meranda as the Speaker of the house, not Obasa, that is our prayer," she said with a voice laden with emotion.
